ConsentOS vs Cookiebot

Which cookie consent tool fits your site best?

If you are looking for a system to manage your cookie compliance, Consentos and Cookiebot embody two extremes in the market: you are choosing here between the do-it-yourself route for techies or the automated cloud route for the masses.

Where they are identical

Both platforms provide the infrastructure to legally handle consent from your visitors according to the requirements of the European GDPR. They ensure that marketing scripts, such as those from Meta or Google Analytics, remain blocked until the visitor has actually taken action. Both also lack an integrated policy generator; you must draft your privacy statement through external means.

Where the difference lies

Cloud versus Self-hosted. Cookiebot is a cloud application (SaaS) from Denmark. You paste a single line of JavaScript code onto your website, and Cookiebot's servers take over: they scan your site automatically for cookies and set up the banner. Consentos is a self-hosted framework. There is no 'magic' script or external server; you install it on your own infrastructure, and it is up to your own web developers to custom-configure the scanners and script-blockers.

Data Sovereignty. Because you host Consentos yourself, you have the absolute guarantee that not a single byte of visitor data leaves your server or is shared with third parties. With Cookiebot, you send the consent logs to their cloud (although this happens securely within the EU).

Costs. Consentos is open-source software and has no licensing fees (free), although your developers' hours can add up quickly. Cookiebot is commercial, offers a limited free plan, and then scales up (starting around $7/month) based on the number of subpages your website has.

Our recommendation

For most regular websites and agencies, we recommend Cookiebot. The automatic scanner saves you a massive amount of technical hassle, and the system maintains itself without you needing developers.

Choose Consentos exclusively if data protection is so crucial for your organization that you absolutely do not want to deploy cloud parties, and you have the in-house technical capacity to build and maintain the system independently on your servers.

Setting up a banner does not equal compliance. Most violations occur post-installation because scripts still load too early via Google Tag Manager. Always run a free scan after configuration to verify it actually works.
